Gary Delaney: There’s Something About Gary @ Stourbridge Town Hall – 16 September 2017

The Borough Halls across Dudley continue with their excellent comedy line -up as Gary Delaney brings his show – “There’s Something About Gary” to Stourbridge Town Hall. Delaney is the skilled exponent of the one liner with killer punchline – as we take our seats on the screen at the rear of the stage is his Twitter feed – featuring a raft of these witty quips which already sets the audience chortling.
Delaney is a local lad (born in Solihull ) has been touring the comedy circuit for many years. Double Sony Award Winner and Chortle Award Nominee, his quick witted jokes have been recognised in the Dave Award for the Funniest Joke at The Edinburgh Fringe. He’s most notable on our small screens for ‘Mock The Week” (look our for him this week as he makes an appearance). He’s also know as the other half of comedienne Sarah Millican. And my life, he likes to write jokes. Hundreds of them.
He takes to the stage tonight to first do warm-up for the warm-up, running onto the stage (twice) with one of those foam fingers on his hand; and a one liner about a prostrate examination. When asked by his Agent to come up with a theme for his long running tour, he came up with “There’s Something About Gary” – a take on the ‘There’s Something About Mary’ film; just so he could have a photo shoot like Cameron Diaz and ‘that’ quiff.
Support tonight comes from another local lad – Andy Robinson. Hailing from Oldbury, a chap who started of as a singer, and grew into his comedy by performing at a pub in Dudley, compering a ‘free and easy’ night every couple of weeks. He reckons that the discipline of cracking funnies between bare knuckle boxing and dog fights was an invaluable experience, and he’s gone on to be the warm up act for many a TV show and has toured with Jo Brand.
He’s an observation comedian and the comedy takes us from the recession, to Paul McCartney (and, let’s be honest, what we all think) and tampons….. He’s worth checking out he’ll be at Birmingham’s Glee Club over the next couple of weeks as part of their Comedy Carousel.
And so to the main act of the night. We’ve had our quick break and we return to those gags off his Twitter feed on screen again. He tells us he’ll be a little upset if he doesn’t get as many laughs as his computer!
There is three things we need to know about a comedy act, he says. 1) Location – a local location that will be the brunt of all those jokes. Today it’s Cradley Heath. 2) Banter. Where a comedian picks on an audience member. As the front of the audience squirm a tad, he tells us he doesn’t do banter – so they are safe. 3) Tell about the audience. Working out what the comedian can get away with, the ‘safe’ jokes’ or the ‘high risk.’ Of course we are in the later and the punchline jokes come over and over, as he takes us on quite a journey – no subject is off limits. He tells us to ignore the part of our brain that visualises his jokes – it won’t be pleasant – and indeed he is correct! The jokes continually go from witty, hilarious and with that occasional groan – and he’s up for trying out new material as well as existing stuff.
His set does include using said screen – some pictures when he’s been out and about – signs of a dubious nature etc. For example have you seen the robot owls on TV show ‘Pointless’? And also his take on ‘commenting’ on Wikipedia. From the main explanation site on Wikipedia (apparently it takes them just 10 seconds to change it back!), to his own profile and a raft of other pages, his comments have us in stitches.
Delaney is funny and quick, he’s likeable and engaging and is a infectious being with a quirky giggle with a snort at the end of it. His ability to come out with punchline gag after gag after gag means you don’t get bored – if you don’t like or get one, hey with 10 seconds there is another. More jokes that a number 9 bus. Well worth catching him if you fancy a night out on the comedy circuit. He’s a few dates left on his tour and no doubt he’ll be out and about in the near future as he preps his next set of gags….
